Academic Services

* Academic Achievement and Cultural Enrichment Program (A.A.C.E)

This is an intensive, accelerated program which serves children in grades one through eight during the summer and on Saturday mornings during the school year. Teachers in small class settings work with children who are least one grade level above their current grade. The school day is enhanced with cultural/recreational activities in the afternoons during the summer. The goal of the A.A.C.E. program is to prepare students for the entrance exams and workloads of the more competitive public, parochial, and independent schools.  (For a copy of the exam application please, click here).

* PSAT/SAT Prep Course

This program serves children in grades nine through twelve. Students in grades nine and ten receive instruction in common background information needed for the PSAT as well as practice exams. Students in grades eleven and twelve receive practice in test taking skills and strategies as well as practice exams.

* Summer Enrichment Program

This is a 5-week academic/recreational program, which serves children ages three through grade eight. Teachers and youth counselors work with children in a ratio of 5:1 in small class settings. Academic needs range from below grade level to above grade level. Special needs children who are able to function in a regular class setting are also included in this program. The school day is balanced with morning academics and afternoon activities. Homework is given daily. The goal of the Summer Enrichment Program is to solidify the skills of the current grade as well as to give a foundation for the upcoming grade.  (For information about the 2010 Summer Program please click here).

Literacy Programs

* Early Childhood Literacy

This is a complete literacy curriculum aimed at helping children become confident, competent readers at a young age. The Clinic has partnered with public and private preschool programs in our primary service area to implement a holistic approach to reading instruction that includes daily phonics activities, development of language, writing, and fine motor skills, thematic units that increase student’s fund of common knowledge, and nightly homework assignments. Over the course of the program, 85% of our students have entered first grade reading at or above grade level.

* Reading is Fundamental

This program supplies books to children to encourage their interest in reading and opens their minds to the pleasure, knowledge and inspiration that books offer. Books are distributed three times during the year to over 1,000 children age three through grade eight who attend the program and/or are in neighborhood schools.
* Running Start

This is a R.I.F. motivational program for first graders. The children are challenged to reach a goal of reading 21 books within eight weeks. At the end of the program the children have an awards ceremony where they are commended and given books and other literary awards.

Support Services

Our support services range from consulting services regarding school choice to family counseling. The goals of these programs are to provide the families of our students with guidance and assistance while empowering the parents/guardians as their child’s primary advocate and perseverance can be gained.

* Counseling/Consulting Services

These services are conducted through parent meetings and workshops and/or one-on-one sessions. They provide personal and professional services and may include the following: community awareness topics, assistance with completing college applications, guidance through the independent school process references and referrals, and family crisis intervention.

* Job Training Program (JEDI)

This program provides work-training experience during the summer for teenagers who have graduated from our program or live in the community. High school students are given an opportunity to become junior counselors, college students to become senior counselors, and college graduates to become teachers.
